How We Test Heated Waterers and Coop Heaters
What we measure
- Minimum liquid-temp: overnight low where trough/nipples stay liquid, not marketing claim. We note rim-ice vs center-liquid separately.
- Thermostat behavior: on/off points with plug-in meter. Most claim 35°F on – we log actual.
- Power draw: watts + estimated $/month at $0.17/kWh. Example: 100W cycling 12h/day ≈ $6/mo.
- Refill pain: can you refill at 6am in gloves without unhanging? Hinged cap vs flip-over matters.
- Safety: cord gauge, GFCI requirement, bedding clearance, tip risk for heaters.
- Flock fit: 1–2 cups/bird/day in winter. 3 gal = 48 cups = ~12 birds for 2 days, less in practice.
What we don't do
- No lab chamber. We test in real coops in WI/MN/VT plus aggregate 1,000+ owner reports from BackYardChickens and Reddit r/homestead.
- No paid samples dictating scores. If a sample was provided, we say so.
- No "perfect for everyone." Every pick lists who should skip it.
